Workout supplements are a tricky thing - there are so many companies out there that hawk products that either a.) don't work or b.) are just downright sketchy. I personally like trying different things for a month or so at a time to see what I like, what works for me, etc. so I was super excited when the folks at BSN Supplements sent me a package of goodies to review which included their Syntha-6 Isolate Protein, caffeine-free N.O.Xplode 2.0, and CellMass 2.0. The CellMass had wheat in it so it got gifted to my coach but I've been using the N.O. Xplode and Syntha-6 Isolate for about 3-4 weeks now so let's discuss.

First up, the caffeine-free N.O.Xplode 2.0. This is a pre-workout supplement designed to help with energy, strength, and endurance during your workout. I usually just use BCAAs before a workout so this was definitely a different sort of product for me. I was super excited that they offered a caffeine-free version because I've tried some other pre-workouts in the past that had caffeine and they made me jittery and then crash. Plus, I like to drink coffee when I lift.

I got the blue raspberry flavor which was actually surprisingly good! I usually DO NOT like blue raspberry flavored things but I liked that it wasn't too sweet (always an issue for me) and had a bit of sourness to it. Now, do I think it helped with my workouts? It's kind of hard to say. I do feel more energized and less gassed during hard workouts and feel like I may get an extra little burst of energy when I need it most - like at the end of a heavy set of 5x5. I LOVED that it didn't make me Overall, I liked the product and I especially liked that there was a caffeine-free version and that it tasted good and not like I was drinking pure sugar ;)

Next up, the Syntha-6 Isolate. I've tried A LOT of different protein powders...and I mean A LOT. The Syntha-6 Isolate is "made with 100% isolate protein sources. A 50/50 blend of whey protein isolate and milk protein isolate (a high-quality source of slow-digesting casein), the formula’s unique ISOLAST™ protein matrix delivers a mix of fast- and slow-release proteins that provide amino acids to fuel active muscles. Drinking SYNTHA-6™ ISOLATE provides the fast-releasing benefits of whey isolate and the prolonged amino acid release of casein for the ultimate post-workout recovery shake." (SOURCE) I received the Chocolate Milkshake flavor and I have to say, it is DELICIOUS. One of the things I liked best about the product was the fact that each serving has 25g protein which is higher than some other companies. Also, they sell 5lbs tubs of protein - yes, please.

The powder also had a great texture - it was super, super smooth even when mixed with just water. It was also a great dessert alternative - I mixed it with some coconut milk to create the silkiest, smoothest mousse ever (so.good.). It even passed the husband test which is always a good thing. Overall, I really liked the powder's taste and texture and it definitely did help with recovery (always a good thing!). I would definitely recommend checking it out if you're in the market for a new protein powder!

That's all I've got for today! I'm SO GLAD it's finally Friday - this week was eternally long.

So tell me:

1. Do you use any pre-workout supplements?

2. What is your favorite protein powder flavor? I used to be a vanilla person all the way but switched to chocolate and never looked back ;)
